This path goes up the entire Cairasca Valley touching upon the lower Alpine pastures of Varzo. This track has become part of the Alpine Pastures Without Boundaries complex of paths joining up Veglia, Devero, and Formazza, with Airolo in the Ticino Canton (Switzerland).
At Varzo, by the Park Vigil’s Home a multimedia museum tells about the archaeological history of these valleys and in particular of the Mesolithic hunters that 8,000 years ago used to hunt around the Veglia basin.
The itinerary starts from the historical town centre of Varzo. We take the nice mule track which goes up on the left side of the river that crosses Varzofino around the town of Colla. From here we go towards Castello and thus we take the path which goes up to Coggia and the Nava Alp. From here, following the directions labeled “Naturalistic Path” (“Sentiero Naturalistico”) we go through a long series of Alpine pastures in Varzo up to arriving to the Fairies’ Woods and thus to Saint Domenico. At Saint Domenico we go down to Ponte Campo along a carriageable road and thus go back up to Veglia along a tractor trail which first begins steep up to the Del Groppallo Chapel and then carries on flat towards Veglia as we enter the impressive gully of the Cairasca Torrent.
