From the square of San Bernardo, head uphill to the mountain hut and follow the signs for Via del Monscera (D00 trail markers). In the first stretch, follow a farm track that cuts through the fir woods and then comes to a turnoff. The trail starts there, rising into a broad grassy plateau (Ridorosso) with an extended peat bog that you’ll walk along using the wooden walkways (thereby not damaging the plants by stepping on them). At the end of the bog, head uphill again to reach the ruins of a chalet and continue until reaching Lake Ragozza. The itinerary climbs slightly to go over a hump, then descend to the Rifugio Gattascosa mountain hut that lies below. From the mountain hut, continue along a stretch of dirt road, passing two bogs, and then turn left for the trail that comes to Lake Monscera followed by the pass of the same name. From the pass, descend by taking the trail on the left. This trail then connects to a dirt track which leads to San Bernardo. Shortly after, you’ll arrive at the large building of Alpe Monscera. Continue until just before the turnoff for Alpe Paioni, where the track is paved. Keep heading downhill to the Rifugio del Dosso mountain hut and follow the steep descent with sharp bends until the bridge over the Rasiga River. From the bridge, turn left off the paved road to take the wide trail along the canal that runs beside the street. Just below San Bernardo, take up the paved street again, near the large peat bog, and you’ll soon reach your departure point.
Notes: this itinerary follows the final stretch that leads to the crossing of Via del Monscera, an ancient trade route which connected Domodossola with Sempione and Briga.
