A loop route starting from the Stra’ Granda, the ancient road of the Anzasca Valley, and arriving at Olino and Drocala, the oldest villages in the Municipality of Castiglione. The itinerary is part of the Via del Pane (the Bread Road), a hiking itinerary that unfolds over small rural towns and explores community ovens, mills, oratories and sacred shrines.

Departing from “Castiglione centro”, a stop on the bus line with a car park, climb uphill to see the parish church dedicated to St. Gotthard of Hildesheim and the square in front dedicated to two partisans killed by the Germans, Aldo Saglio Salti and Sergio Ionghi. Continue along the ancient road of the Anzasca Valley, the “Stra Granda”, heading towards the village of Pecciola and passing the majestic chapel of “fontana fredda” (cold waters). At Pecciola, take the stairs which lead to Jelmala, with its oratory dedicated to the Madonna di Re (Our Lady of the King) and an old bread oven which is still in use, then continue on to cross the large valley and arrive at the hamlet of Crotto, which is still inhabited year round. From here, it is worth heading downhill in a quick, easy detour until Porcareccia, a village located between the two towns of Calasca and Castiglione, which were combined into a single community in 1928. Once back in Crotto, hike uphill to the hamlet of Olino which, along with Drocala, is the oldest in the municipality of Castiglione. The hamlet has a well-preserved centre with a pretty bread oven and a connected “bread room” where baked goods are prepared. Once through the town, continue uphill to Colletta to then cross the large valley towards Drocala. You’ll pass through a meadow bordered by dry stone walls called the “cimitero pagano” (pagan cemetery) to then enter the old centre, surrounded by flat, well cared for meadows. Once you’ve reached the small church, pass by a covered fountain and take the mule track (trail B04) which leads back to Castiglione.
