The route departs from the hamlet of Cheggio in the upper Antrona Valley (where there is an automobile checkpoint). It runs along the road that leads to the cableway landing near the dam. Just before the dam, enter the steep trail to the Preia Pass (Passo Preia, SI signage – part of the Grand Italian Trail). Before Alpe Bisi, continue past the turnoff for Alpe Pasquale and follow the trail along the hillside, crossing the Pasquale Valley to arrive to Alpe Scanach and then lower Alpe Teste. From here, take the steep uphill path until it meets the trail that climbs to the Rifugio Andolla mountain hut. Descend to Alpe del Gabbio, cross over the Loranco Creek bridge and continue around the flatlands of the western shores of Lake Cheggio until arriving to the dam and then the town of Cheggio.
Notes: A loop excursion that is partially at a high altitude and thus offers spectacular views of the lake. The initial stretch above the dam is particularly steep and, until lower Alpe Teste, there are exposed stretches as well as portions over rocks equipped with grab chains for safety.
